چکیده

This work presents the first results of an experiment aiming to derive a high resolution Digital Terrain Model (DTM) by kinematic GPS surveying. The accuracy of the DTM depends on both the operational GPS precision and the density of GPS samples. The operational GPS precision, measured in the field, is about 10 cm. A Monte Carlo analysis is performed to study the dependence of the DTM error on the sampling procedure. The outcome of this analysis is that the accuracy of the topographic reconstruction is less than 1 m even in areas with a density of samples as low as one sample per 100 m2, and becomes about 30 cm in areas with at least one sample per 10 m2. The kinematic GPS technique gives a means for a fast and accurate mapping of terrain surfaces with an extension of a few km2. Examples of application are the investigation of archaeological sites and the stability analysis of landslide prone areas.

Understanding Archeological Landscapes: Steps towards an Improved Integration of Survey Methods in the Reconstruction of Subsurface Sites in South Tuscany

The Department of Archaeology at Siena has been engaged for several decades in the testing of new methodologies, new approaches and new instruments for construction of the archaeological record. In relation to landscape archaeology and in particular with the South Tuscan landscapes the low level of visibility and heavy clay soils have directed us towards those techniques of remote sensing that ...

Spatio-Temporal Modelling of Dust Transport over Surface Mining Areas and Neighbouring Residential Zones

Projects focusing on spatio-temporal modelling of the living environment need to manage a wide range of terrain measurements, existing spatial data, time series, results of spatial analysis and inputs/outputs from numerical simulations. Thus, GISs are often used to manage data from remote sensors, to provide advanced spatial analysis and to integrate numerical models. In order to demonstrate th...

Large Scale Terrain Modelling for Autonomous Mining

This thesis is concerned with development of a terrain model using Gaussian Processes to support the automation of open-pit mines. Information can be provided from a variety of sources including GPS, laser scans and manual surveys. The information is then fused together into a single representation of the terrain together with a measure of uncertainty of the estimated model. The model is also u...

Digital Elevation Accuracy and Grid Cell Size: Effects on Estimated Terrain Attributes

Terrain attributes are commonly used to explain the spatial variability of agronomic, pedologic, and hydrologic variables. The terrain attributes studied here (elevation, slope, aspect, and curvature) are estimated readily from digital elevation models (DEMs), but questions remain about how the accuracy and sample spacing of the elevation data affect the estimated attributes. The main objective...

Symbolic Algebraic Computation as a Way for Modelling Kinematical Tasks Themselves

The paper introduces the symbolic algebraic computational capability of Surface Constructor, a software tool for gear investigation. Use of symbolic expressions in the kinematical model gives a higher freedom in constructing and modifying the model. Modelling in this manner we can model the kinematical model itself and can make a kinematical modelling shell. The advantages of applying symbolic ...
